Imagine someone smiling at you. Feels good, right?
Now, imagine that person has something going wrong with their gums. That’s sort of creepy, isn’t it?
Well, that’s what periodontal disease looks like. And what is feels like is definitely worse. Let’s check out the symptoms of periodontal disease.
But before that, what is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease refers to infections around the teeth which primarily affects your gums. The plaque and tartar that builds up around your teeth works as a medium for the growth of bacteria which in turn damages your gums. Your gums gradually erode away exposing the root of your teeth. This is called periodontal disease. If left untreated, these bacteria have the potential to destroy the teeth as well.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease:
The symptoms of periodontal disease include severe manifestations of the symptoms of gingivitis (a less serious gum disease) and more. The symptoms vary from person to person depending on the severity of the condition and other factors. Again, this disease does not necessarily affect all of your gums at the same time. Let’s see what the possible symptoms might be:
- Nearly unprovoked bleeding from the gums
- Bleeding from the gums during brushing teeth or chewing
- Red, swollen or itchy gums
- Pus in gums
- Loose tooth
- Persistent bad breath and taste
- Receding or eroding gums
- Dental sensitivity
- Pain in gums or teeth
If you notice any of these symptoms of periodontal disease, you should go to a dentist immediately. Periodontal disease can lead to serious health issues if you do not correct it at the earliest.
Periodontal disease is a very serious gum issue. Best, don’t let it get that far. It cannot generally be treated with good or added dental hygiene practices. Let’s check out your treatment option.
Treatments for Periodontal Disease:
Scaling: Scaling is a non-surgical process of dealing with periodontal disease. During scaling, your dentist will remove the existing bacteria and tartar. With very careful oral care, your gums will regrow and reattach themselves.
Root Planing: After scaling, the dentist will smoothen out the teeth surfaces to prevent further growth of bacteria. This process is known as root planning.
Flap surgery: In flap surgery, the gum flaps are flipped out and the inside area is cleaned. The gums are then sutured back in its original place.
Laser treatment: If the flap surgery is successful and you are able to prevent gum issues from there on, you might be a good candidate for laser treatment. Through laser treatment, the empty pockets created due to loss of gums are filled up.
Tissue & bone grafting: If you have lost too much gum and bone density of the tooth, the doctor might advise you to go for bone and gum grafts.
Antibiotics and painkillers can help you prevent infections and manage pain. All the procedures are generally complemented with these medicines.
India is one of the leading nations affected by dental diseases. One study shows that nearly 85% of Indian population suffers from periodontal disease. If you have periodontal disease, your tooth loss is not far away. So, rush to your dentist to save your teeth, your gums and the aesthetic appeal of your smile!
